Vet Warning: Sharing Christmas Dinner with Pets Can Be Extremely Dangerous

As new data reveals nearly half (48%) of dog owners are planning a special Christmas dinner for their pets, Dr. Samantha Butler-Davies MRCVS, Veterinary Services Director at Pets at Home highlights the potential dangers of sharing human food with pets.

The new research by Pets at Home suggests 1 in 10 dogs will get a seat at the Christmas dinner table, and popular festive foods such as turkey (67%), ham (42%), and pigs in blankets (40%) will be shared with dogs.

Worryingly, some owners will also give their pets stuffing (13%), chocolate (9%), and Christmas pudding (8%) – all of which are dangerous.

Chocolate, which contains theobromine, is highly toxic for dogs and cats, while raisins, sultanas, and grapes, commonly found in Christmas pudding and mince pies, can cause serious illness. In fact, just one grape can result in acute kidney failure which can be fatal, so it is vital to ensure these items are kept well out of reach.

Dr. Samantha Butler-Davies MRCVS, Veterinary Services Director at Pets at Home, shares her top tips to help ensure a safe and happy festive season for your pet:

  • “It’s essential to avoid giving your pet any bones, as they can splinter and cause serious internal injuries or blockages. Even cooked poultry bones, which might seem harmless, pose a significant risk to your pet's health. Stick to pet-safe, specially designed treats to keep them happy and healthy this festive season.”

  • “While us humans love Christmas treats, some of the most popular ingredients in these foods such as chocolate, macadamia nuts, sultanas, raisins, and alcohol are all poisonous to dogs, so make sure you keep them out of reach.”

  • Unsuspecting food items, such as stuffing, can also be dangerous, as they’re often made with onions, garlic, and seasoning which can all be harmful to dogs and cats. If you suspect your pet may have eaten something poisonous, contact your vet immediately.”

This Christmas, treat your pet to safe and nutritionally balanced meals to avoid the risks.
